Let’s be honest, a lot of us have this confused. I, up until recently, didn’t really know a clear dichotomy between the two. Some may beg to differ but branding and marketing are not the same and have some distinct differences. However, they are still related and definitely go hand-in-hand with each other. It’s especially important to know this for those of you looking to get into this industry to be able to help businesses either better position themselves when communicating to their target audience or better reach them.
Think about some of the relationships you developed in your lifetime so far. What was it about someone that made your friends, start dating, or even develop a business relationship? Probably things like their views and values, or their personality and how they carry themselves. This is what branding consists of. Branding mainly has to deal with how people feel and view your product, service or you as a personality. So anything from your logo, to the color scheme that you and typefaces that you use, and your overall aesthetic is a part of it. however, it doesn’t just stop with the looking feel it’s also about the concept that you use to communicate to your audience. What are you saying? How are you saying it? What types of events or publications are you a part of?
Isn’t it awesome how a lot of our favorite brands to shop with tend to offer a coupon code to save us money, in exchange for just an email? That is an amazing example of great marketing. A huge part of marketing is being seen and reaching your audience. Things like signing up for an email list allows brands to be able to continue to sell to you and reach you let you know about things like new merchandise or sales you might be interested in taking advantage of. Marketing can get really technical as well and involves a lot of things like SEO (search engine optimization), measuring numbers and KPI (Key Performance Indicators) and understanding algorithms, especially for social sites. Marketing is all about the selling, and being found.
As you can see having a strong brand is definitely different from being a great marketer, but still similar. marketing is all about reaching your desired audience, where branding is about making connection with them. Both of these roles are very important, it’s up to you to decide which is more your focus to help better build your business. now of course there’s much more intricacies to both, and there’s a ton of information on the web to really dive deep. My expertise is more so on the side of branding, so if you’re looking for help feel free to schedule appointment so that way I can help consult you on how to better brand your business.
